Levels of Engagement in Task-based Synchronous Computer Mediated Interaction

Investigating task-based synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) interaction has increasingly received scholarly attention. However, studies have focused on negotiation of meaning and the quantity, focus resolution language related episodes (LREs). This study aims to broaden our understanding role audio, video, text SCMC conditions by additionally examining second (L2) learners’ levels engagement during production LREs as a result interactive real-world tasks. We tested 52 dyads L2 Spanish intermediate learners who completed decision- making/writing task. Our main analysis revealed that in audio condition engaged more limited vis-à-vis group, also showed trend engaging elaborate LREs. The findings imply can place differential demands learners, which an effect ways address interaction.
